Edward William Dolch developed the list in the 1930s-40s by studying the most frequently occurring words in children’s books of that era. The list was first published in a journal article in 1936 and then published in his book Problems in Reading in 1948. Students choose a different color for each sight word, then dab and spell their words aloud.
